Garmin announced two new wrist-mounted GPS devices: Foretrex 601 & Foretrex 701.

The Foretrex 601 & 701 navigators are best for hiking, backpacking, backcountry skiing, military and scientific missions. Both empty-handed navigators are MIL-STD-810 compliant, provide GPS / GLONASS / Galileo satellite systems, 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis compass and barometric altimeter.

When paired to a mobile device with Garmin Connect Mobile app they offer smart notifications and live tracking features.

The new Foretrex devices weigh 3.1 oz / 88 g with two AAA batteries. The battery runtime exceeds 48 hours in navigation mode, up to 1 week in UltraTrac mode and up to 1 month in watch mode.

Both night vision goggle compatible devices feature a 4-color gray display with 200 x 128 pixels. USB, ANT+ and Bluetooth Smart interfaces are build in; the hands-free navigators are compatible with heart rate strap, speed / cadence sensor, Garmin VIRB action camera and Garmin tempe temperature sensor. A unit-to-unit route / location sharing is also available.

For your navigation experience both devices offer a preloaded basemap, 500 waypoints, 20 routes, 10.000 point track log and 100 saved tracks with 200 points per track. Features are point-to-point navigation, bread crumb trail in real time, back to start, TracBack, Sight 'N Go, waypoint projection, elevation profile, dual grid coordinates and customizable data pages.

The new Foretrex also features QuickFit watchbands that can be easily interchanged in seconds, without tools.

Foretrex 701 comes with Applied Ballistics Elite software for hunters and target shooters that calculates aiming solutions for long-range shooting.

The Foretrex 701 will be available with a suggested retail price of $599.99 USD, the Foretrex 601 with a SRP of $249.99 USD (Europe: €599,99 / €249,99).


  1. Hi, I was wondering if it is best to postpone buying any gps until the broadcom BCM47755 is built in next year. Would you agree? I would like the 601 but if it will get longer battery and improved accuracy then I think I should wait.

      may be? The question is if Garmin will use a chip like the Broadcom in the next years? I guess the question might be "What do you really need?" – lane-level accuracy as broadcom claims? And the Foretrex battery life is good enough:…
